The YKL classification system, which is
being used by most of the Finnish public libraries, is an adaption of the
American Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC). The whole area of knowledge
is broken down into ten main categories, which in turn are further divided
into ten sub-categories and so on, as far as is needed. The books are
first classified according to their principal subject matter. If several
matters are covered in one piece of work, other classifications can also
be included in its bibliographical description. The first class, however,
always tells the placing of the book on the library´s shelves.
On the shelves of the libraries the
classifications are usually slightly elaborated. The books are separately
alphabetised within each class or sub-class number on the shelves, usually
according to the author. In Kokkola City Library the Anders
Web Library gives the information, into which class the work is
classified, and leading to the right shelf.
